Liquor Dinner

I've always been amazed by people who order a hard liquor drink with their dinner. Don't get me wrong, I drink with dinner nearly every day. But I only have a beer or wine which enhances my food.

When the people at the next table at Hereford House started ordering vodkas for a first round I was genuinely flummoxed as to why they weren't ordering beer or wine. Does a vodka drink or a whiskey drink help enhance a meal? I can't imagine it does, but, again, I'm not much one for hard liquor.

A margarita is probably acceptable with Mexican food, but that's about the only mixed drink I can think of that I would drink with a meal.

For those that order a hard liquor drink with dinner, why do you do it? What do you drink? Do you hate your spouse/companion? Are you Russian? Do you disappear from your kids' birthday parties to go drink?

Silly boy! Bourbon makes everything better!

Russians drink vodka with dinner, probably because it's traditional and makes you drunk without having to consume mass quantities.

It's weird because I almost never drink beer with dinner, just hard liquor. Actually, I normally prefer water when eating dinner but if it's a drinking dinner I'll order a Scotch or a smooth whiskey on ice and then sip on it between dishes. It cleans the pallet like sorbet does and it evolves over the course of the dinner as the ice melts. Goes really well with steak and red meat.

I always prefer liquor and mixed drinks to beer or wine. Always.

Beer is way too filling for a steak dinner. And there is nothing quite like kickin it old school with a martini and a steak.

Bourbon (with coke, rocks, or neat) before a meal or with appetizers. Beer with pizza. Beer or margarita with Mexican. Wine with steak (yours was a good one). Beer with burgers/brats.

Oh and the Bloody Mary with steaks or Italian. That's my hardest liquor WITH food.

After dinner beer or bourbon.

I usually get really drunk, gorge myself on appetizers, and then get sleepy before the main course. I have a bit of an issue with the hard liquor. Before I know what happened, I'm pissing in the bathroom sink, smearing shit on the walls, and stealing anything not bolted down. It's a little off.
